WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?
There might be slight variation between classes, but basically, for bellydance classes it is best to wear comfortable clothing that you can easily move in:
- Stretch pants, leggings, long flowy skirt, pantaloons, yoga pants, etc (no jeans or tight skirts)
- A top which allows you to easily move your arms above your head - cami, tanktop, singlet or T-shirt
- A scarf or something to tie at your hips - this really helps to focus the moves
- Bare feet or soft shoes like Jiffies, or dance shoes
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO CLASS?
- A smile and enthusiasm!
- A bottle of water to drink (if you forget, there will be some bottled water available to purchase)
- A notepad and pencil
- Please check the class notes for each individual class for any special extras that you may need to bring
HOW DO I ENROL?
Please contact the class teacher directly to enrol in a specific class.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
To take classes with us, each student needs to become a member of the Free Spirit Dance Community Inc. Membership is $5 per annum, renewable in February each year. Social memberships are also available, please refer to our Membership page for more information about dancing and social memberships.
Class fees may vary a little from one class to another. Full details can be found on each class description page. Please contact each teacher directly for more information.
DO YOU HAVE EFTPOS FACILITIES?
Sorry, EFTPOS and credit card facilities are not available. That's how we can keep the prices of classes right down. We have casual rates - pay as you go - so that it's not a big financial burden.
Can you please pay for your class in cash - correct change would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
DO I HAVE TO PERFORM? CAN I PERFORM?
That is entirely up to you! There is no pressure to perform if you do not want to.
However, if you do want to perform, and if your teacher feels that you are ready, then all Free Spirit Dance Community classes will have the opportunity to dance at our regular Haflas.
DO I HAVE TO SHOW MY BELLY?
That is entirely up to you. Some dancers never show their bellies, others love to!
We find that in the classes, most students will wear a T, tank or cami, but some love to wear a crop top or choli. It all depends on the weather and your mood I guess. :)
What is most important is that you feel comfortable and enjoy your class.
WHAT ABOUT MEN?
At the moment, we do not have any men attending our dance classes, however, there has been some interest.
We understand that many women may feel uncomfortable having men in their class, so we will be scheduling some classes which are specifically "mixed classes" where men may participate.
IS THERE A SPECIAL MEANING FOR YOUR LOGO?
Yes, there is indeed special meaning in the elements of our logo.
- The three moons represent the three stages of feminine - the maiden, the mother and the crone, which govern life cycles and nature.
- The three whiffs of smoke/air represent freedom of spirit
- These are encompassed by a circle, to symbolize all together living harmoniously on Earth.
WHO DREW THE PICTURE OF THE DANCER ON THE MAIN PAGE?
The tribal dancer who graces our pages was drawn by Betsy Watkins.
Betsy was a very talented artist, and a much loved member of Free Spirit Gypsy Tribal and Tribalive! She passed away in March 2009.
Betsy once joked that if we ever held a "Tribal Fest in the West", it should be held in the "Betsy Watkins Memorial Hall". So we have named our special Studio dance space in loving memory of our dear "Miss Betsy".
